A small and impactful nonprofit in the Baltimore area seeks a qualified Director of Finance

Position Summary

The Director of Finance provides strategic leadership and hands-on management of all financial functions for the organization. This role oversees accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, grants management, compliance, and internal controls. The Director of Finance ensures accuracy, transparency, and financial sustainability to support the mission of the nonprofit.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Accounting

  • Oversee all day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger maintenance.
  • Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes to ensure timely, accurate financial statements.
  • Maintain and update the chart of accounts and accounting workflows within QuickBooks (required).
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit card statements, and grant accounts.

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with leadership and department managers.
  • Prepare financial forecasts, cash flow projections, and scenario analyses to support organizational planning.
  • Track budget vs. actual performance and provide regular updates to leadership.

Compliance & Reporting

  • Prepare financial reports for the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and Finance Committee.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and all federal, state, and local nonprofit regulations.
  • Manage annual audit preparation and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors.
  • Monitor grant spending, prepare financial components of grant reports, and ensure compliance with funder requirements.

Internal Controls & Organizational Leadership

  • Develop, implement, and monitor internal financial controls and financial policies.
  • Support strategic decision-making by providing financial insights and analysis.
  • Supervise finance staff or contractors as applicable.
  • Participate in organization-wide planning, process improvement, and operations optimization.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of professional experience in nonprofit financial management.
  • Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks (required).
  • Demonstrated experience managing audits, budgets, and nonprofit grant accounting.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards (e.g., restricted funds, cost allocations).
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a mission-driven environment.
